The Dallas Empire have done it!
On Sunday, the 2-seed Empire defeated the 1-seed Atlanta FaZe 5-1 to become the first team to win the Call of Duty League Championship.
As an advantage to coming out of the Winner’s Bracket, Dallas started the match with a 1-0 map lead. From there, they quickly jumped on Atlanta: winning Map 2 (Hardpoint on Azhir Cave), Map 3 (Search and Destroy on Gun Runner), and Map 4 (Domination on St. Petrograd). Atlanta finally got on the board with a Map 5 win (Hardpoint on Gun Runner) but Dallas didn’t let them gain any momentum, shutting them down on Map 6 (Search and Destroy on Rammaza) to seal the victory.
As league champions, Dallas gets a whopping $1.5 million, the championship trophy, and some cool swag to celebrate their momentous achievement. Atlanta takes home a respectable $900,000.
After the match, Dallas’ James "Clayster" Eubanks shared his reaction to the victory in an interview with Landon Sanders. “I feel amazing. I feel so good. To go back-to-back, add another ring on the finger, you know, this is a dream come true. This is a resurgence this late in my career. It’s all props to my teammates. Shoutout to them.”
The Empire’s Ian “Crimsix” Porter was named the 2020 Call of Duty League Postseason MVP, presented by ASTRO.
The path to the championship match was set for Dallas after they beat Atlanta 3-2 on Saturday in the Winner’s Bracket final. Atlanta had to get past the 4-seed Chicago Huntsmen to get into the final.
Dallas finished the regular season with the second-best record in the league at 23-12. In their other playoff match they knocked off the 7-seed Toronto Ultra.
